Would you write your own prescription?
Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 10:56PM I have talked to several people coming out to Waters Landing Golf Park the past week who were trying out their new clubs that they bought online. There is no doubt you can get some great prices online. However, how do you know what to buy? Most of the people that I talk to who buy on line are not experienced golfers and not particularly knowledgeable about golf equipment. To me one of the biggest mistakes is made in set make up. One of the guys I talked to purchased irons that included a 3 and 4 iron. Most of the sets that I sell nowadays do not include 3 irons and often no 4 iron. Instead we are including hybrids or lofted fairway woods. The average player has a very difficult time hittting 3 and 4 irons. So how good of a deal is it if you buy 2 clubs you don't need and you still need to buy one or possibly two more clubs to complete your set? So my analogy is would you write your own prescription? or would you get some professional help? Usually clubs are a significant investment wheter you get a great "online deal" or not, set make up is just the beginning, what about shaft flex, lie angle, driver loft, grip size and more? Most of the time the old adage really is true "you get what your pay for". One final thought I have heard "I got a great online deal on these clubs, I am going to get them fitted later". This is not a good idea, the fitting should be done before you purchase, so your unique specifications can be special ordered to your specs. More on this later, but be careful!
